This is my first time not going back to school since I was three years old. I’ve always either been a student or a teacher (or a student teacher!). Today is just another Tuesday for me while many of my friends are waking up early, have spent countless days working on lesson plans, and are excited and nervous for this year’s new batch.
I have to say, I really have mixed feelings about this. I have always loved school. I was good at it, so it was never a source of anxiety or boredom. As a teacher, I loved organizing, setting things up, meeting students and never knowing what the next day would bring. Not going back has made me realize what I love most about the first day of school: Fall is near! The first day always makes me feel like Autumn is around the corner. This means football (Go Green!), layered clothing, homemade soups, new TV shows and holiday season. The first day of school is ceremonial in that sense. Not going back has taken away from that a bit.
However, I have to admit, a new sense of freedom has definitely taken home in me. No papers to grade, no lessons to plan, no parent phone calls to make, no professional development, no unruly classes, no workplace responsibility. All I need to do is take care of my baby, and that’s pretty cool. I know that I will have plenty more first days of school in her life. So, for now, I am enjoying having an ordinary Tuesday. I think I’ll spend the day on Pinterest finding cool things to celebrate Fall!
Some pictures of my old classrooms…some before I set them up and the walls exploded with student art and posters!
What are you doing on this first day of school?
