Ellen the Birthday Girl

July 22, 2012 By Jenna 12 Comments

My baby. My squeaky monkey. My little Beanie. She is 12 months old today! Obligatory statement about how time flies, and I feel like I just brought her home from the hospital. It’s cliche because it’s true, people. So, let’s talk Ellen, shall we?
Ellen, I started this blog for you. I wanted everyone to know how important you were and are to us from the moment you were placed in my womb. Because of this little Internet space you inspired, I have made so many friends, found a deeper love of writing, and had tons of great conversations with people all over the world. It has brought me great joy to watch this blog grow. But, you know what? It pales in comparison to the joy you have brought to my life. I would give it all up for you (as I often do every day – you’re kind of demanding, kid!). You inspire me, motivate me, teach me and surprise me each minute of the day. Pretty cool, huh? So, what have you been up to this month?
You still love going to gym class, and you kinda think you own the place now. You are all over everything and everyone!

Mima and Gramps took you to two zoos and an aquarium when they came to visit this month! Your favorite is still the water animals. You even got to touch a starfish and a sea urchin.
Here you are at a petting zoo with Gramps. You’re a bit unsure of this goat and that’s ok. All of the zoos must be paying off though; you can do so many animal noises now!

You learned to drink from a straw, and now you won’t drink from anything else…except me. You want to nurse all day and night now for some reason. You don’t want as much solid food. Just mommy food. It’s tiring; I’m not gonna lie.

We went back to Minnehaha Falls and had dinner at Sea Salt. That’s our favorite place to go lately.
You started to learn to walk on your own earlier this month. You’re almost there, kiddo! You’re taking steps and standing on your own. So close!
You’ve been enjoying tons of snuggle time with your daddy-guy.
You celebrated your first 4th of July (which was your last first holiday), and we were surprised to learn you know now to climb stairs!
You had a week where you were terrified of the bath tub. We don’t know why. But, mommy jumped in the tub with you, and you were all better after that. Now all you want to do is climb in the shower while mommy is in it.

You got into the pool for the first time this month too.  We thought you’d be so excited. Honestly, you acted as if nothing was going on. You didn’t hate it. You didn’t get excited. You just were. Weirdo.
You also learned to turn on your CD player and change the songs. You love to push buttons…including mine. Here you are with a credit card you stole from my purse changing songs on your Elmo CD.
You have been playing with your friend Cliffie a lot too. You guys love to splash, eat blueberries, and read books together.
You have also been giving everything kisses! You love to pick up you dolls, rock them and pat them on the butt. They you give them big snuggles and kisses. It is the cutest thing in the whole world. Seriously.  You know what else is cute? You can point to most of your body parts this month, but you love belly buttons. You think it is hilarious to pull up our shirts and stick your fingers right in there.
Finally, you are a little sass this month too. Your favorite things to say this month is, “No!” Ellen, let’s change your diaper. No! Ellen, don’t throw your food. No! Ellen, give mommy a kiss. No! You will vary it a little too: “Nononononono!” Do I say that word too much? You are pretty adventurous and mischievous, so it’s possible. Here you are refusing to hold you 1 year sign for your picture. No!

We’re spending the day today at Mima and Gramp’s house at your polka dot party! I can’t wait to blog about it later this week. Baby girl, you’re my whole wide world. God bless you this year and for all the years to come.
