30th Birthday Mess

November 2, 2015 By Jenna 9 Comments

Instead of writing a bunch of separate posts, you get this big old mess of a post, but it’s my (30th!!!) birthday today, so maybe just roll with me?

Dia de los Muertos

Today is All Souls Day. Remember to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. And learn more about today’s indulgences here. I’ve got some pics of this year’s sugar skull makeup. See past years here.

We spent yesterday at the Detroit Institute of Arts where they had an ofrenda exhibit. I was in Dia heaven, while the kids were less than thrilled and more than scared.

The best gift? My brother surprising me from Cali <3

Etsy News

  • I’m having a sale in my shop until the end of today. 15% off with code DIADELOSMUERTOS. Get some Christmas shopping done, maybe?
  • Also until the end of the day (7:30 est), there is an Insta-auction going on to support the Van Drie family. Kristen is a fellow Michigan maker, and her family recently suffered the loss of their sweet 6yo daughter Kaylee. Consider supporting her family by bidding on one of the hundreds of donated items in the Instagram auction located at @candlesforkaylee.
  • My friend Kathie just opened up her Etsy shop, and it is just in time for the chill coming in. Adorable hats and high quality photography. I mean, check out my kiddos:

I think my favorite item in her shop right now is the Cinderella hat. Supah clever! Click over and give her a heart on Etsy.

Blog Announcement

Now that my book is done I feel like my blog has come to fruition – like it was all building up to this: a resource to really help people battle a cause I feel passionately about.

I’m not done blogging; I’ll still post here from time to time, but I’m going to focus my efforts on my embroidery shop and (if the winds of the spirit blow me in that direction) homeschooling. Oh, and God wants me to write another book coming next year: The Lazy Liturgical (all about how to celebrate and observe the many feasts and solemnities of the Church without any preparation at all) – so there’s that too.

Ashley will be taking over 5Faves starting Nov. 11. She’s so incredibly qualified that it ain’t even funny.

And my site will remain as well. Consider it more of a landing page for all things Call Her Happy: the blog, the book, the shop, the girl.

And, if you’d like to keep up with me, I’ll be over on the gram peeking on you too.

El Fin

If you made it all the way down here, good on ya. Leave the names of your faithfully departed in the comment section. I would love to pray for them today.

These are good people.

October 26, 2015 By Jenna Leave a Comment

These here are my people. I implore you – yes, implore – to check out what they have to offer. Why? Because these people (among men-ay men-ay others) made 30 Days to Calm possible. Show them the love they deserve, mmkay? If you do, I’ll be all like

After seeing how God carried her through the most difficult experience of her life thus far, as well as everything that has followed since then, Jen is learning to trust that God always knows best. She now writes about faith, family, and embracing God’s will in all aspects of life.

 Conversation with Women

A website where Catholic women come together and discuss. They share their stories and support each other in matters of sexuality, marriage, society, and living the faith. Women submit anonymous testimonials of how they have accepted the church’s moral teaching and how they have lived the teaching, struggles and all….most importantly how that moral teaching has born fruit in their lives. The on-line conversations continue through comments and also provide kindling for many off-line conversations.

Mary’s Mantle

Not all women face pregnancy with the support and love of family and friends. Many women who contemplate abortion do so because they feel they have no other choice. There is no one to support them, protect them, or nurture them as they bring new life into the world. Mary’s Mantle was born from the experience of one such young woman. Young, alone, and finding herself kicked out of her family home when they found out she was pregnant, this mother had nowhere to go. Worse yet, those who tried to help her could find nowhere for her to go – there were little to no resources for her as she thought about bringing this new life into the world. Sadly, feeling alone, unloved, and frightened, this young woman ended her baby’s life, though that was not an avenue shehad initially considered at all. The founders of Mary’s Mantle felt that no woman should have to suffer in this way. The doors of the metro-Detroit home opened in June of 2010. Since then, over 40 women and their children have called it home.

Pitter Patter Diaries and Rakstar Designs

Californian by birth. Iowan at heart. Texan by education. Michigander by marriage. Catholic convert from Hinduism. Wife (to Tim), Mother (of 3), Daughter, & Disciple. In this station of life, I am aspiring to become a “seasoned amateur” like my dad before me, both in photography and other art forms, primarily digital design, watercolor, and hand-lettering/calligraphy. With the advent of “the YouTube” and online seminars, I am learning as I go, in photography and in other art forms. Rakstar Designs originally began as a photography studio, but has since evolved as my adventures in the creative process ebb and flow their way through time and space.

#5Faves: Recent Etsy Purchases

February 3, 2015 By Jenna 18 Comments

Usually before I shop elsewhere, I check Etsy because – indie artists and PayPal. Things I love. Here are my #5Faves purchases as of late. Shameless promotion: check out my shop. New Valentine’s Day necklace up!

Desktop21

-1-

Dia de los Muertos Rosary: Allison designed this piece for me so that I could pray for souls in purgatory and the unborn. And because I love DdlM. In case you didn’t know me.

-2-

Plush Crown: Sam is forever nabbing all of Ellen’s tiaras and snapping them in two like, “I mean, it’s just plastic, it’s really just… A piece for Gretchen Wieners, a partial Spring Fling Queen…” So, anyway, we bought him his own plush crown, and um, it’s adorable.

-3-

Lion Pouch: I originally bought this to put some prayer books in until I realized I measured wrong. Measure once, buy twice. So, since I still love it, I am using it to organize some embroidery stuff. I feel like royalty.

-4-

Hair Clips: These were stocking stuffers for my girl who loves “hair pretties.” She is also a sucker for Peppa Pig. Perf.

-5-

Dapper Fox Tie: When I saw this tie I thought 1. my brother must have this and 2. that fox is so dapper. Turns out it’s called the Dapper Fox Necktie. So fitting. It really…suits…it. ha.

An Easy Way to Cinch Up Messes

July 21, 2014 By Jenna 10 Comments

I’m still kickin’ it low tech style over here: not much blogging, candles, leaves and pinecones for…ha. nope. But, I did come out of hibernation for un momento to showcase a lovely little Etsy shop.

photo 1 (1)

Wanda, the owner of Cinch It, says, “Drawstrings….. Because everything should be tied up nice and neat!” She knows my heart, people. And, her adorable little mess keepers come in sizes Rosary through Yoga. So, you should be able to find a little cinch sack for anything you need to keep tidy.

photo 2 (1)

I’ve got to say, I am partial to Cinch It because she sent me a little bag for Sammy J to tote his beloved cars and shoes around. The kid has a shoe.fetish. He loads up his bag, tosses it over his shoulder Huck Finn style, and is on his merry, saggy diaper way. And you know, it’s really hard to find cute things for boys sometimes.

photo 3

photo 4

And, look all around you. I guarantee you have a million messes you’d like to cinch. If you are telling me no, then you’re a big ol’ one. Think about what you’d like to keep tidy and handy. You’ll need this answer later for the…

Avery Lane Boutique Giveaway

September 18, 2013 By Jenna 50 Comments

I was given a product for review, but thoughts are all my own. Por supuesto.

You know when you find one of those little gems on the Internet, and you want to tell all of you friends about it? This is me telling you about it: Avery Lane Boutique.

Avery Lane Boutique is a one woman operation by Casey Hanks (the pretty gal in most of the pictures). Everything in her boutique is completely current, but at the same time, totally wearable (and there is free shipping!). I would say that pretty much sums up my style: I love to stay on trend, but it needs to be affordable and practical. Because, you know, sometimes there is puke and kids running into traffic and kids puking while running into traffic. That is Avery Lane Boutique – not the puke stuff; I mean all the good stuff I said before.

Ahem. So, wanna see my sweet duds?

Aztec Leggings

I have rocked both of these already, and they are totally adorable and cozy. I feel kind of guilty that they look that good on, yet I feel like I am ridiculously comfy all day. I want that for you. I want you to love like I love, so it’s giveaway time! Can I suggest the Dolman tops or the Falling for You Hooded Jacket to spend your winnings on?

Livin’ in a Dress Up Castle

August 23, 2012 By Jenna 2 Comments

And that was a word from my sponsor!

Onwards.

I am so excited for when Ellen wants to play dress up. I already asked my dad to make her a cool dress up box (Because he is talented like that and made me one when I was little…remember those dad? The built in ones in our basement? So cool.)

Anyway, I can’t wait to see what kinds of fun things she dresses up as. I already bought her a little doctor’s coat, some scuba flippers and various other odds and ends.  I keep my eye out for things when I am thrifting or garage-saleing. And although she doesn’t use the stuff on her own, I sure have fun playing make believe. Here is Ellen as a beauty queen-astronaut:

In addition to the random stuff I bought her, Ellen has an abundance of tutus. I always said I wouldn’t be that mom who bought her daughter tutus (and quite honestly, my mom does most of the buying), but why the heck not? In a world where things are so politically correct and confusing, why not celebrate being a female and just how beautiful and fun that is?

I digress. Let me get to the point. I was talking about tutus, not trying to start a gender revolution. So, tutus. Among Ellen’s various tutus (polka dot, flowered, red, pink, etc. etc. etc.), is a really cute Christmas one. It is red, green and white (duh), and made by my good friend, Lisa. Ellen loves it, and can really wear it year-round because we are Italian, and that’s just national pride, bupalina. Back when we first got the tute. Look, ma! No hair!

Not only did Lisa make her a really cute tutu, she also made her an adorable paci clip and a tote bag that Ellen uses as her baby’s diaper bag now. Check them out:
So, Lisa didn’t ask me to write this post. She is just such a sweet friend who loves children and crafting. Check out her Etsy shop (for girls and boys) and show her some love. She does special orders too!
