A Typical Day of a Stay at Home Mom

October 14, 2013 By Jenna 21 Comments

Maybe you were curious and followed me on Twitter this past Wednesday using #jenna4aday. The goal was to live tweet an entire day in my life – nothing special, nothing held back. And, well, I did it. It was a fun experiment, but by the time it was over I was sick of tweeting.

So, why did I do it?

I am always curious how others live their lives. Maybe it is partly me being nosy, but it is also largely due to insecurities. Am I doing this right? How do other moms get through the day? How much TV do other moms let their kids watch? Am I lazy? And on and on and on…Maybe if I am interested and unsure, then other moms might be too. What does a typical day of a stay at home mom look like?

Out of those thoughts, #jenna4aday was born. Here’s my day. Warning: it’s a long one.
Ever wonder what a stay-at-home-mom does all day. Here is a typical day in this mom’s life - her stay at home mom schedule. And while kids change and days vary, this will at least give you a basic idea of what each minute looks like. | motherhood | parenting tips | toddlers | mom life

A Typical Day of a Stay at Home Mom

Up and at ’em. Still not sure why I don’t drink coffee. Kids were up in tandem last night. Weee. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Going to try to jump in the shower before the kids wake up. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Longer shower than normal. Had to wash hair. I only wash is every 2-3 days. Sam is awake now, but he’s not hungry…yet. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Goal before Ellen wakes and Sam ears: dress, makeup, brush teeth, morning prayer. And Sam is pooping…#jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Checking my mail and stuff while I brush my teeth. Multitasking at its finest. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

My devotional today says to do something I have been avoiding. Let’s see if I can clean that front loader. And Ellen is stirring #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Sam wants to eat. Everything done but makeup. I’d do it while nursing, but can’t turn light on bc Ellen is in our bed this AM. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Answering emails while nursing. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Ellen is waking up crying. Good sign… #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

First thing out of her mouth every morning: Where’s my daddy? #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Gave her snuggles and the iPad. Time for makeup. #jenna4aday ps Sam is a fast!!! nurselette.

Kids ready. Time to go downstairs for breakfast. Sam drooled in Ellen’s face. LOL. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Sam crapped on 3 outfits yesterday, so he is wearing the same thing he wore last night. Oh well. #jenna4aday pic.twitter.com/iq9dosop0z — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

First fit of the day: can’t decide what toy to bring downstairs. #jenna4aday

Ellen’s breakfast: Greek yogurt, veggie muffin, 2 clementines, prune juice #jenna4aday

Sam moaning on playmat. Going to try to get my bfast. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Going to have to wear Cptn. Cries-all-day. Still getting my bfast. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

2nd tantrum: didnt want to sit while eating. TV on, Sam has Tylenol, still wearing him while he cries. I’m hungry! #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Scarfing some PB toast, dried apricots and a la croix before music class. Ellen wants my breakfast instead. Sam still crying. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

So thankful Mike did all the dishes last night. #cleankitchen #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Once I calm down Sam and put out tantrum 3&4 (I don’t like Sophia anymore! Dont turn off the tv!) we will get ready to go #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Every time we leave the house: http://t.co/vNcJuuZqxQ #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

We normally walk, but today we are driving to class. Errand to run afterward. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Kids in van without incident. Off to music class. Ellen sad bc we didn’t walk today. Off we go. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Out of music class. Nursing Sam in van then heading to post office to get nursing pads. Will explain later. Gonna play on phone. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Off to USPS. Ellen screaming bc I took her toy bc she kicked me and smacked me while I buckled her. Now wants snack. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Met lady at post office who was selling her nursing pads. Tried to go to farmers market: closed. Home for lunch. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Ellen’s lunch: bfast leftovers+granola bar. TV on. Sam sleeping. Gonna fold socks that have been in pile for 1+wk. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Socks done. Going to answer a few emails while Ellen eats. Nap time when she’s done. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Gonna let Ellen finish Mickey Mouse before nap. I’m gonna grab a little bite. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Heating up leftover chx enchiladas for lunch. Sam awake. Time to change diapers while food heats. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Ellen bribed into quiet time. Sam on play mat. Need to reheat lunch. Then it’s my time to blog. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Sam is fed, napped, tylenoled, and snuggled. Still crying. Going to eat/blog one handed while I hold him more. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

When Ellen naps, I like to watch tv, blog and eat. No chores. But Sam is cryinggggg…#jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Usually he calms down if I play Ave Maria by Gretchen Harris. Not working. Boobs it is. I’m hungry too. Gonna try to eat again. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

He’s fed, listening to Ave Maria & done crying. Ellen still chatting upstairs. I finally ate. Gonna try 2 blog while Sam chills. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Right now you are going to pick up my recyclables? During nap? This isn’t going to end well. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Ugh. Sam. You need to stop crying all day long. And Ellen, go to sleep. I just want some quiet…#jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Blogging with one hand. Sam… #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Mail is here. Favorite time of day. Ellen still chatting. Still consoling Sam. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

There is seriously no consoling this kid. I am ready for this season to be over so I can do anything but calm him down all day. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Ellen telling me she is done w/ the nap she never took. This is where I start to feel guilty bc I don’t want her down yet. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Sam sleeping! Woop! Going to try blogging again. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Going to try to lay down Sam. Ellen just said she fell out of her crib. brb @jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Well, she did not fall out of her crib. Just “bumped her knocker.” Isn’t going to sleep, so I brought her downstairs. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Sam is sleeping, but Ellen wants to play blocks. I will blog later. Is there any such thing as “me-time” with 1+ kids? #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Sidenote: Still have TV on. Feel so guilty that I like it on during the day. I just like the noise, but I feel like a bad mom. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Bright side of no me time? QT with her. Hard to schedule in most days. #jenna4aday pic.twitter.com/J7KAC0a4zN — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Btw: changed an absolute bomb when I went upstairs to get Ellen. Mmm #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Ellen wants a snack. Pretzels. Clean washer take 2. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Started cleaning washer. Bleach freaks me out. Once it self cleans, I need to take it apart and clean other components. Weee! #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Once Sam wakes, think I wanna go to the farmer’s market. It’s open until 6. What to do until he wakes? Empty DW? Sit on my butt? #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Just created a pinnable image for a guest post I am working on. Now time to empty DW and get a drink of wa-wa. #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Skipped the dishwasher. Turned off TV and had a little dance party. Sam is up. Nursing while Ellen plays #jenna4aday — Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Tantrum: wants to listen to a song on my phone. Song does not exist. #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Ellen, are you regretting that nap you didn’t take, or is that just me? #jenna4aday

— Jenna (@callherhappy) October 9, 2013

Tantrum: afraid I will not play What Does the Fox Say? on repeat. #jenna4aday

That sounds about right. Now that mine are 4 and 2, there’s less nursing and more activity changes, answering the question “Why?” and trying to figure out why it’s so quiet.

One big difference is that the NFL players' union has never had as much clout as the MLB players' union. Fortunately for the NFL, that prevented the folly of the cancellation of the world championship, which baseball suffered in 1994.On chemical enhancements, which Steve has written about, I was reading Ken Stabler's "Snake: The Candid Autobiography of Football's Most Outrageous Reo.agdee&qunt; He writes how, in the 1970s in the Raiders' locker room before and during games, always available was a bowl of uppers, which the players popped like candy.

I like to have the TV, music or EWTN (radio) on during the day. I need adult conversation going on or I go crazy haha.

I stand by my “supermom” comment. I’m home with Sullivan today because daycare is closed and I don’t know how you do it every day. I mean, I love kid. Like seriously adore him but I’m not cut out to be a stay at home mom. I salute you, super mom! :)

I have 4 kids, one of which is 9 months old. I feel you on the “not wanting to soothe all day” but mine is getting happier by herself as we practice it. I just jinxed it, didn’t I? Have you looked into RIE? I like a lot of the posts about helping babies self-soothe, Janet Lansbury has some great ones.

I don’t do a lot of music/tv during the day, except for listening to the Popcaks in the am. I can’t handle the noise. We’re in 996 square feet, so there’s not anywhere to go to get away from it.

I really appreciate you doing this, its nice to see that other moms are insecure too. Not that I’m happy you’re insecure…. you know what I mean. :)

http://www.janetlansbury.com/2013/03/bonding-with-babies-where-rie-and-attachment-parenting-differ/ is a great post about RIE. Like any “parenting technique” I’ve seen it go into really odd territory, but I do really love a lot of the principles.

Basically that yes, it is our job to meet our child’s needs but it’s not our job to “make them happy.” Where attachment parenting says that if your baby cries you’re a failure, RIE acknowledges that sometimes you just need to cry. It also gives babies/children the same basic respect levels as teenagers and adults- if you wouldn’t yell at, say, your co-worker for spilling a drink, why would you yell at your child. As an aside, I would totally lose it on a co-worker so I’m often a failure and have a lot of growing to do! :) An example is that if your friend was visiting and was really upset because a situation wasn’t working the way she thought it should, you wouldn’t immediately pat her on the back and tell her not to cry, that its nothing to cry over, or shove a nipple in her mouth if nothing else worked. You would sympathize with her, acknowledge that it is a rough situation and then offer potential solutions. If there really was no solution you would simply comfort her as she suffered.

If all needs are met (diaper, food, comfy clothes) then you can just acknowledge the upset and comfort from there. “I know you’re upset because you can’t play any more and you need to go to bed, but it is bedtime so how can I help you get there.” “I know you want milk but first we need to change your diaper. Would you like to hold the diaper for me while I take your dirty one off? If we work together then it will go faster.” That way the interaction goes from you doing something *to* the kiddo to doing something *with* them. For me it has been a HUGE relief because I don’t get to the point where I feel like the baby hates me because she won’t stop crying, and I can pass it off on her you know?

Another tenet is that you give them plenty of notice, even with babies. I’ve found that with mine (she’s 9 months) I can say “we are going to be getting into the car. I know you hate your seat but you have to be in it” and wait for a little signal to know that she understood. It seems totally against all parenting advice I’ve ever gotten and it took a while to get where I am (I’m still really new to RIE type parenting) but even when she was smaller I could totally tell she was acknowledging.

Ok. I’m done. I should do a blog post about our journey with RIE…..

Feels like my daily life — only more busy because I only have one right now. I love naptime quiet and the freaking recycling / garbage man always used to wake my son when he was younger. grrrrr.

Sometimes I think having one can be even harder! You don’t have another to entertain themselves – although I am not at that point yet, but I am looking forward to it. So even though you *only* have one, you are doing a hard job too! And rocking it, I’m sure :)

I’m about 2 years late to see this post, but I’m gearing up to SAHMdom and I’m guessing my days will be a lot like this. Thanks for the insight, it’s a little less scary when you know what to expect!
