Hey bit-chompers. I am back with installment 2/2 of the Interior Freedom retreat I attended last month. Why did it take me so long to do it? I have children. And a house. And chores. And life is so hard. Wink.
Let’s just get into it.
Last time I told you about four ways the world misunderstands the idea of freedom, today I want to tell you how to remedy those confusions – stream of consciousness style.
The most important thing to remember is that freedom and love are inseparable. There is no true freedom outside of love – otherwise it is a false freedom like the ones I talked about last time. This is why God respects our freedom so much; He wants to be served out of love and not fear.
So, what is true love?
True love is giving of yourself freely. Without this love, you become a prisoner of passion, and this is what our world glorifies: pursuing that which is best for ourselves and our own happiness. True love is acting not for personal comfort but to bear fruit. We must sift out what is not of love (pride, self-centeredness, fear, penance out of guilt, false obligations, fear of God).
Some may argue that not following your every passion and whim is a lack of freedom, but in reality, lack of freedom is not in the circumstances. It is in the interior. The heart and mind.
And, some may confuse true love with the feeling of loving – and this can be scary. But, sometimes we can love with truth and faithfulness without feeling an extraordinary feeling. This is so comforting to me as I am not a very emotionally loving person. I have people I love, and I try to always act selflessly for them, but I don’t constantly feel an overwhelming sense of giddy love.
The end game? When all that is left is heaven, faith and hope will disappear. On Earth, we need these two gifts, but once in heaven, we no longer need them. They will be replaced by true knowledge of God and possession of all that we desire and wish for. The only thing that will remain is love.
But here and now, true freedom is to grow in love. To grow in love we need hope and an increase in faith.
Prayer: Lord, show me when my words and decisions are not inspired by love – when they are not truly free.
