The Dehydrated Girl’s Guide to Water

May 26, 2014 By Jenna 25 Comments

Many people like drinking water to lose weight, but there are so many other benefits. But, in order to harness the power of h20, you must create healthy habits of mind and body. Check out these wellness tips that will have you drinking your daily ounces with ease! Love the graduated bottle idea.

I’m the worst at drinking water. The worst. I could go an entire day without a glass and never notice. So you can imagine how top notch I feel nursing all day, working out at the gym, and not drinking h2o. I feel great. And by great I mean dizzy and shriveled.

So, maybe some of you crave water. Maybe some of you keep a bottle near you all day and constantly sip. But, that doesn’t work for this prune.

Here is what I *try* to do:

Fruit Water: Mix half a bag of frozen fruit + a small thinly sliced lemon in a water pitcher. Fill with…water. Keep in fridge. My wonderful SIL taught me this one, and the kids gulp it too.

Many people like drinking water to lose weight, but there are so many other benefits. But, in order to harness the power of h20, you must create healthy habits of mind and body. Check out these wellness tips that will have you drinking your daily ounces with ease! Love the graduated bottle idea.

Lemonade Spritzer: I think I’ve mentioned before that I am obsessed with lemonade. If water was lemonade, I would have no problems in this arena. But, since I’m parched, I like to pour a 1/4 glass lemonade and mix it with sparkling water.

La Croix: Glorified sparkling water. But, I can take it on the go, and that way I get my hydrogen hydrogen oxygen while I’m hitting the pavement too.

Chug-a-Lug: Mike taught me this one. He likes to fill a glass of cold-ish (not ice cold) water and just chug it straight down until it is gone. He does it whenever he goes in the kitchen. I know it’s better to sip water throughout the day than drink it all in one sitting, but when you’re a walking Sahara, this is better than nothing.

Use a Straw: I always drink water more readily with a straw. Something about not having to strain my poor arms to reach for my beverage. It’s appealing, right?

Download Waterlogged: I did this for a while, and it actually worked for me. You can set reminders to drink water throughout the day and keep track of how much you drink. Maybe I need to do it again…

Use a Graduated Bottle: You know, one of the ones with the ounces written on the outside? I have a 30oz bottle, so I know I just need to drink two a day to be done.

And, now from our audience? A tip to help me sip?

oh my gosh, I’m the worst at drinking water….my family has to practically force me. I decided I’m going to invest in a super cute water bottle to help me out!

No help from me either I’m a crisp! I love your idea of the fruit water and must try this. When I am in the office, at home or anywhere I am going to be sitting I set up a coffee, water and cherry pepsimax at hand and the lazy proximity seems to help. I also use very large cups and tumblers 600ml size and treat myself to really pretty bone china or tall acrylic to stop it feeling like weightlifting!

Wish I could help more. I’m pregnant and nursing and I was getting horrible headaches every single day. Turns out I was only drinking 2-3 quarts of water and I need 4 quarts a day. It’s really hard to get that much water in every day, but the headaches were enough to make me try. I got a 750ml bottle and just keep it full throughout the day. I bring it with me everywhere. That seems to be helping me. Because the whole drinking one glass at a time wasn’t working for me lol I would loose track and finish a cup and then go another few hours without drinking anything. By the end of the day…I’d have consumed like 4-5 8oz glasses which is so not enough.

I’m terrible at it as well. My husband drinks water like a fish but I just don’t think about it.

My best tip is to take a glass of water to every meeting at work. I usually have a few a day, and the rule is I have to fill up a whole new glass before each new meeting. If they’re back to back and I didn’t finish, time to chug! I don’t think I’ve ever had 8 in one day, but it’s a start!

I SWEAR by this water bottle: http://www.target.com/p/plastic-freezer-bottle-56-oz/-/A-13788728

I have two of them. I keep one at my desk at work and one by my nightstand. It keeps my water cold with the freezer insert (although sometimes I take it out), it has a straw, which makes it easy to sip, and a handle, so it is easy to reach for and hold. It is sturdy, too. I wasn’t a huge water drinker either but this thing makes it too easy!

A really simple, delicious waterish concoction is lemon ice water. ;) Just ad ice to water, and squeeze a lemon into that. SOOO good. And refreshing. Happy Memorial Day.

This is really timely for me because I’ve been wanting to drink 8 glasses of water a day and yesterday I finally got close – 7 glasses. And then I woke up twice last night to use the bathroom. I can’t decide if I prefer to be well hydrated or to get a good night’s sleep!

I’m on a one for one plan. If I drink one cup of coffee, I rise it, fill with water and drink.

I’m terrible! I only really *like* water if I’m really thirsty. I love your infused water ideas. My dehydrated girl recommendations are: glass first thing in the morning and glass right before bed. I know that’s not “enough” but at least if you get those, all is not lost.

I totally have this problem too! I bought a Cosco plastic cup (I think 28 oz? It’s large) when I was breastfeeding during the summer. Having the straw, the large volume that took awhile to run out, and a top so the kids couldn’t spill it and the cat couldn’t drink it… all these things made me drink a lot more water. Whatever works, right?!

When I got pregnant my doctor said I wasn’t drinking enough of the H20 either, so my husband got me one of those bite-to-drink Camelbak water bottles – and the amusement of biting to get the water out was enough to almost triple my water intake every day. I really like my double layered one (they sell ’em at Target) because it keeps the water nice and cool!

I used to have this problem but once I started trying to work out and lose weight more consistently (a year or two ago) and just forced myself. I didn’t like to drink water because it didn’t have a flavor, but once I got used to it, I actually crave water. So refreshing! Also, cheap!
But, I do drink more at work and I think because it is easier because I have a 16oz cup with a straw. I will easily get in 80+ oz just in a work day, plus a cup or two of coffee. But, on the weekends, I do not get enough. And the headache abound.

I’m glad I’m not alone! I’m just a bad drinker…whether it’s water, soda, or juice! One of the reasons why I don’t drink alcohol is because I just don’t really drink…after 2 sips I’m done! LOL and sometimes I get headaches bc I think I’m dehydrated…fail…..I recently had the fruit juice and it was good!

I’m also on Team Straw. I just find that I can get the water down so much faster if I don’t have to bother with lifting the glass.

This is hilarious, and the part about straws is so true. “Walking Sahara” totally describes me!

Great content. I have been trying to find a way to retain water for exercising, without retaining too much water weight at the same time. I was searching for alternatives to coconut water that doesn’t have too much extra sugar. Your blog gave me an idea to try chia seeds and green tea, I think that might work! Thanks for writing!

Naaah, water is life. I can’t go on with a day without it and aside from that water is the healthiest fluids we take. So, it is good for everybody.

Our body needs water to function. You can mix it with a lot of fresh fruits (lemon, watermelon, melon, etc)
