This Year’s Dia de los Muertos Look

November 2, 2014 By Jenna 6 Comments

Last year I went a little tame. This year I added a more color – pink. Ellen approved this year unlike last year when I was told I am “never allowed to put that makeup on again.” Yeah, like her work isn’t scarier:

Anyway, here is how I knocked ’em dead.

Does anyone have any good tips on taking impromptu photos in poor lighting?

I was a little surprised that I saw so many sugar skulls at the festival we went to. But, we were in southern Florida, and I know there is a large Hispanic population in that area. So, maybe I shouldn’t have been so shocked. I’m used to having to explain what the hell I am to Midwesterners.

Next year I’d like to get a higher quality white base as well as a liquid black liner for smoother edges. I think I will also try some shading with multiple colors too. What would you like to see me do next year?

Dia de los Muertos Makeup Tutorial

Perfect your sugar skull costume with this sugar skull makeup tutorial for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This is a super simple look that doesn't require special, expensive makeup, stencils or even a very steady hand. Learn different variations of one simple look to create something unique.

Wantable sent me their Halloween makeup box, and they asked me to do a tutorial and review for you. Since I am a big Dia de los Muertos fan, I put together a step-by-step Dia de los Muertos makeup tutorial for you just in time for Halloween and All Souls Day.

Perfect your sugar skull costume with this sugar skull makeup tutorial for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This is a super simple look that doesn't require special expensive makeup, stencils or even a very steady hand. Learn different variations of one simple look to create come thing unique.

Supplies Needed for the Dia de los Muertos Makeup Tutorial

  • Wantable Halloween Box (contains Ultimate Eyeshadows in Gold & Very Black, Hollywood Lights Glitz in Oscar & Chorus Line, Tacky Glitter Adhesive, False Lashes, Lash Adhesive, Ultimate Lip Pencil in Ruby, Lipstick Palette Kit in #1 Can Buy Me Love
  • Black eye liner pencil (I used Wet n Wild)
  • White face makeup (I used Professional Cream Makeup by Fun World)
  • Curling iron
  • Silk flower(s)

1. Start with a fresh face of makeup. I applied concealer, powder and one coat of mascara.

2. Apply white face makeup to entire face in an even layer.

3. Apply Ultimate Eyeshadow in Very Black to entire area surrounding your eye sockets including your lids. I found that the eye shadows in this box had a very saturated color, and they went on easily when I applied them with my finger. They have a powdery texture, and they didn’t seem to crease. If you can still see pink areas of your lash lines, use the eyeliner pencil to fill those in.

4. Use your eyeliner pencil to create a spiderweb design on your forehead. You could also draw a cross, a rose, a star, a heart or swirls and dots that follow the contours of your face. Of course you can also do a combo of these things too.

5. Use your eyeliner to color the tip of your nose. You can draw connected triangles like I did, or you can fill in the entire tip in a spade-like shape.

6. Next, use the Ultimate Lip Pencil in Ruby to line your lips. I went slightly outside of my natural lip line to create a fuller effect. This lip pencil was smooth and very vivid in color. Then, fill in your lips with a shade from the Lipstick Palette Kit in #1 Can Buy Me Love. Again, just like all of the other products in this kit, these colors are very vibrant on the skin. Touch up your lips with liner to even out the look.

7. Use your eyeliner to draw designs on your cheeks, lips and chin. Swirls, crosses, hearts, “stitched” lips, dots, and flowers work well in these areas. You can even add rhinestones at this point too. When applying eyeliner over your painted lips, make sure to do that step at the very end. Otherwise the red lipstick will get on your black pencil and end up elsewhere on your face.

8. Get out the Tacky Glitter Adhesive and Hollywood Lights Glitz in Oscar & Chorus Line. Dip the brush into the adhesive, and then dip it into the glitter of your choice. Apply the glitter along and around some of the designs you have made on your face. Be sure not to add too much. It is an accent, and when you start adding too much of anything, it takes away from the beauty of your designs. A note on the glitters and adhesives: I was very surprised at how well these two products worked together. I thought it was going to be a hot mess trying to apply the glitter, but it was so easy and mess free. I was honestly shocked and pleased.

9. Stick on your false eyelashes using the directions provided with the false lashes and adhesive.

10. Give your hair some curl and volume with your curling iron. Add a flower or flowers to your hair to finish your look. Muy bueno.

Everything in the Wantable box held up very well. It wasn’t waterproof, so crying at haunted houses and bobbing for apples are out. But it will stay vivid and in place if you don’t mess with it. Eventually and sadly, you will have to wash your face.

To Remove: Rinse your face well with warm water. Wash with your fave soap. Use makeup remover to clean remaining makeup. Wash again. Use a toothbrush to remove lipstick residue. Moisturize face and lips. All of this makeup comes off super easily – and I love that.

Your Turn

Now give it a try and take lots of pics. Then post them to Instagram and tag me in them so I can gawk at your awesomeness. And, don’t forget to order your Wantable Halloween Box here. Maybe you can even come up with your own Dia de los Muertos makeup tutorial.

Dia de los Muertos

November 2, 2011 By Jenna 5 Comments

This is one of my favorite days of the year. Dia de los Muertos. The idea of it, the execution of it, everything is beautiful. It’s also my birthday. Because of this connection, I have always felt a strong calling to pray for all of the souls in purgatory. For my birthday, will you join me?
God told St. Gertrude that anyone who prays this prayer will release a vast number of souls from purgatory:

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls  in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

#5Faves: Tattoo Ideas

August 4, 2015 By Jenna 22 Comments

For years I’ve preached that not having a tattoo is the new tattoo. And now I want one. I chalk it up to the fact that despite the revolving baby door and all of the excitement (currently thinking of a new word…) that comes with, life has pretty much been the same for five years.

Well-before getting married, it was all: next grade, new school, new classes, next trip, new job, next next next. And, I loved the change. It’s why I am always creating something new. Always taking on a new project. Never satisfied.

I’d say there is some merit to that. There are also some pitfalls (overcommit much?) And it makes a b s o l u t e l y no sense that I would consider something so permanent. But, I mean, I got married and had kids, right? I’m clearly capable of big-time big-girl stuff.

What you’re witnessing here is my inner dialogue. I apologize.

Here’s all you need to know:

  • there’s a good chance I’m gonna ink myself
  • I have a design and an artist picked out
  • it will include lavender, text, watercoloring
  • Mike is campaigning for me to go with a half sleeve
  • actually, there’s a good chance I will chicken out

And while I won’t be branding myself with all of these, here are 5 of my favorite tattoo design ideas:

tl;dr December

December 2, 2014 By Jenna 7 Comments

Mike is home on vacation this week, so I feel so out of the internet loop. I’m doing things like enjoying my time with him and having fun with the family. It’s unusual. So, tell me what you’ve been up to the past month – in a nutshell. Here’s mine:

tldr.jpg

In November:

  • I celebrated 29 years on Dia de los Muertos
  • Mike was 27 the day before Thanksgiving
  • My anxiety has been hyper-elevated this trimester, and I ask for your prayers in a big way
  • I did my first craft show and added a bunch of new designs to the shop
  • We did a gender reveal party and found out it’s a boy!
  • I’m doing a HUGE handmade giveaway this first week in December. HUGE.

Some for Realsies & Some for Not {V-Day Gift Guide}

February 12, 2014 By Jenna 3 Comments

 .

I’ll let you decide. No judging.

-1-

For the Crafty Love

Project DIY: I have reviewed these boxes before, and I am back with the newest one. I can’t even explain how much I would love a subscription to this service. You can order one box, a yearly subscription or something in between. The lucky gift receiver will get all of the supplies and directions to create 2-3 on-trend accessories that she will get compliments on and questions about all.the.time. Trust me.

In my book, there is nothing better than a gift that I can create with.

-2-

For the Never-Nude in Your Life

Denim Jort Boxers: Show them you care by enabling their obsessive disorder. These faux jorts have all of the comfort of real underwear. They are ultra thin which means they fit easily under another pair of real boxers. Buy two pairs so your loved one has a backup while these are in the wash.

-3-

For the Accessory and Makeup Maven

Wantable: Another box I’ve showed you before, and I wanna share anudder. This is another subscription box. Pick a one time box or an ongoing subscription. Choose an accessory, makeup or intimates box. Take the personal style quiz. Then, a consultant will hand-pick your goods based on your interests.

I picked a makeup box both times because I am well-rounded. What will I get? 4 to 5 full-sized premium makeup products, hand-picked to perfectly match my preferences. Nice.

-4-

For the Hygrophobic

source

Trongs: Picture this: Your man is watching the big game with all of his buds. They’ve got chips, salsa, nachos, beer, cocktail weenies, and wings! He heads over to make himself a plate, but wait! First he grabs out his Trongs. He wouldn’t want to get any sauce on his fingers, after all. Think of all the napkins he would waste. Think of all of the high fives he would miss. Think of how many germs he might consume without them. Think of how popular he will be with all of his friends. Think.

-5-

For the Catholic Sweetheart

546772_181282558657752_1696361396_n

Catholic Family Fun: Now, you could go out and buy a copy of this for your love-uh, and I heartily suggest you do. But, you could also try your luck at the giveaway going on over here. You won’t get it in time for St. Valentine’s day, but free is free, right?

-6-

For the Neurotic Jet-setter

source

source

Disposable Plane Sheets: I can’t think of anything more convenient than getting your family ready for a vacation, arriving at the airport on time, waiting through tickets, baggage and security, lugging them on a plane with all of your carry-ons, getting everything stowed overhead, making sure the toddler doesn’t have a meltdown, and then casually cover your seat with with a fashionable and disposable (comfort! quiet!) seat cover.

Honestly, out of all of those items, the seat is easily my biggest concern and anxiety inducer. And, what says “normal” and “I’m not a security threat” louder than unwrapping a camo body protector?

Happy Valentine’s Day! Tomorrow.

I was given some of these products for an honest review. And honest I was. Honest.

30th Birthday Mess

November 2, 2015 By Jenna 9 Comments

Instead of writing a bunch of separate posts, you get this big old mess of a post, but it’s my (30th!!!) birthday today, so maybe just roll with me?

Dia de los Muertos

Today is All Souls Day. Remember to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. And learn more about today’s indulgences here. I’ve got some pics of this year’s sugar skull makeup. See past years here.

We spent yesterday at the Detroit Institute of Arts where they had an ofrenda exhibit. I was in Dia heaven, while the kids were less than thrilled and more than scared.

Etsy News

  • I’m having a sale in my shop until the end of today. 15% off with code DIADELOSMUERTOS. Get some Christmas shopping done, maybe?
  • Also until the end of the day (7:30 est), there is an Insta-auction going on to support the Van Drie family. Kristen is a fellow Michigan maker, and her family recently suffered the loss of their sweet 6yo daughter Kaylee. Consider supporting her family by bidding on one of the hundreds of donated items in the Instagram auction located at @candlesforkaylee.
  • My friend Kathie just opened up her Etsy shop, and it is just in time for the chill coming in. Adorable hats and high quality photography. I mean, check out my kiddos:

I think my favorite item in her shop right now is the Cinderella hat. Supah clever! Click over and give her a heart on Etsy.

Blog Announcement

Now that my book is done I feel like my blog has come to fruition – like it was all building up to this: a resource to really help people battle a cause I feel passionately about.

I’m not done blogging; I’ll still post here from time to time, but I’m going to focus my efforts on my embroidery shop and (if the winds of the spirit blow me in that direction) homeschooling. Oh, and God wants me to write another book coming next year: The Lazy Liturgical (all about how to celebrate and observe the many feasts and solemnities of the Church without any preparation at all) – so there’s that too.

Ashley will be taking over 5Faves starting Nov. 11. She’s so incredibly qualified that it ain’t even funny.

And my site will remain as well. Consider it more of a landing page for all things Call Her Happy: the blog, the book, the shop, the girl.

And, if you’d like to keep up with me, I’ll be over on the gram peeking on you too.

El Fin

If you made it all the way down here, good on ya. Leave the names of your faithfully departed in the comment section. I would love to pray for them today.

#5Faves: Recent Etsy Purchases

February 3, 2015 By Jenna 18 Comments

Usually before I shop elsewhere, I check Etsy because – indie artists and PayPal. Things I love. Here are my #5Faves purchases as of late. Shameless promotion: check out my shop. New Valentine’s Day necklace up!

Desktop21

-1-

Dia de los Muertos Rosary: Allison designed this piece for me so that I could pray for souls in purgatory and the unborn. And because I love DdlM. In case you didn’t know me.

-2-

Plush Crown: Sam is forever nabbing all of Ellen’s tiaras and snapping them in two like, “I mean, it’s just plastic, it’s really just… A piece for Gretchen Wieners, a partial Spring Fling Queen…” So, anyway, we bought him his own plush crown, and um, it’s adorable.

-3-

Lion Pouch: I originally bought this to put some prayer books in until I realized I measured wrong. Measure once, buy twice. So, since I still love it, I am using it to organize some embroidery stuff. I feel like royalty.

-4-

Hair Clips: These were stocking stuffers for my girl who loves “hair pretties.” She is also a sucker for Peppa Pig. Perf.

-5-

Dapper Fox Tie: When I saw this tie I thought 1. my brother must have this and 2. that fox is so dapper. Turns out it’s called the Dapper Fox Necktie. So fitting. It really…suits…it. ha.

One great way to organically gain more followers on Instagram is to use your hashtags. First, use popular hashtags that fit your niche and your photo. Second, click on those hashtags and explore other users’ photos. Like 50 or so photos a day, and you should slowly see a return on followers.
